Before you read a single word of this, I want to tell you something I kept secret for most of my career.
I grew up not being able to read.
Not because I wasn't smart — but because the moment I'd start, I would fall asleep. Every single time. Didn't matter how much I wanted to read or how interested I was in the material. My eyes weren't working together the way they should, and my brain would just check out.
So instead of reading, I moved.

And nobody knew that reading was such an issue. It wasn't something I talked about — I'd built my whole life around what my body could do, and the reading thing was just… a separate problem I'd learned to work around.
Then at a conference — somewhere between the exhibitor booths and the breakout sessions — I stopped at a vision therapy table almost by accident. A practitioner handed me a simple eye coordination exercise. Two minutes. That's it.
Something shifted.
My reading improved — but what stopped me cold was what happened to my spine. Thoracic mobility I'd been working on for years just… opened up. Immediately. From a two-minute eye drill.
I stood there trying to make sense of it. If a simple visual input could do that — in two minutes, with no hands-on work, no equipment, no repetition — what had I been leaving on the table for ten years without knowing it?
That moment started a decade of learning. Neuroscience. Vision therapy. Vestibular research. Proprioceptive training. A Lecturer on Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School tried this work as a client and endorsed it on the spot. I used fNIRS and EEG brain imaging to measure what was actually happening in the brain when people used my methods and tools — including the BrainSpeed Ball. Brain-based work isn't just for clinical populations
One common assumption Pilates teachers carry into this conversation is that brain-based movement belongs in rehabilitation — stroke recovery, Parkinson's, post-injury rehab. Clinical populations with clinical needs. Not your Tuesday morning client who wants to feel stronger, move better, and age well.
That assumption is understandable. And it's wrong.
The brain systems that drive movement quality — vision, the vestibular system, and proprioception — are operating in every person, every session. These systems don't turn on for clinical cases and turn off for everyone else. They're always running. And when they're not working well, movement suffers — regardless of how hard the client works or how skilled the instructor is.

The method was always ahead of its time
Something worth coming back to often is how far ahead of his time Joseph Pilates actually was. The entire method is built on proprioceptive awareness — training the body's internal sense of position and movement. He understood that the nervous system was driving everything long before neuroscience had the language to explain it. That wasn't an accident. That was genius.
Every time you cue a client to feel the floor beneath their foot, you're working with the proprioceptive system. Every time you change the surface they're standing on, you're sending a different signal to the nervous system. Every time you ask for a refined sense of position or pressure, you're doing exactly what Joseph Pilates designed the method to do. You've been teaching brain-based work all along. You just may not have had that language for it.

But here is what Joseph Pilates didn't have yet. Proprioception is only one of three sensory systems driving movement, posture, and balance. The visual system and the vestibular system are doing a lot of work — and in most Pilates sessions, they never get intentionally addressed. Not because the method is incomplete. But because that piece of the puzzle wasn't fully understood yet when the work was developed.
The vestibular system lives in the inner ear and responds to head position and movement. It tells the brain where the body is in space and how it's moving. When it's well-calibrated, movement is fluid and confident. When it's not, you see exactly the kinds of compensation patterns that are hardest to cue away — because you can't cue your way out of a vestibular problem. You need to optimize vestibular input.
The visual system is equally powerful and equally overlooked. Where the eyes go, the body follows. Gaze direction and visual tracking directly influence how the nervous system organizes posture, balance, and movement quality. A single change in where a client is looking can produce a shift that no amount of verbal cueing has been able to achieve.
When you add visual and vestibular training to the proprioception foundation you're already teaching — something shifts. Clients who have been working hard and plateauing start to break through. Movement changes at a level they haven't experienced before. And it starts to feel like the method just got a little more complete.
This is the gap. And it's why some clients never fully respond to even the most skilled, thoughtful Pilates instruction — because the instruction isn't reaching all the systems that are actually limiting them.

Using These Tools in a Real Session
Work smarter, not harder
Here's something most Pilates teachers don't talk about openly: the job is exhausting. Not because the work isn't meaningful — it is. But because so much energy goes into cueing, correcting, and repeating — without the results a client needs.
Much of that effort is being spent at the wrong level. When a client can't organize a movement, the instinct is to cue harder, cue differently, cue more. But if the real issue is a visual or vestibular gap, verbal cueing alone will never fully solve it. You're working around a problem rather than addressing it. And that's what makes the work feel like such an uphill climb.
Brain-based tools change the effort equation. When you address the neurological input that's actually needed, movements that required twenty minutes of cueing can shift in two. You don't add a brain section — you upgrade what you're already doing
You don't need to redesign your sessions. You need to layer targeted neurological inputs into the structure you already have. Here are four clear ways to do this.

Set the stage prior to any other movement

Priming reduces the gap between what you're asking for and what the client can access — which means less frustration, fewer compensations, and faster results.

Layer a brain-based drill directly onto an existing Pilates exercise to increase the neurological demand without changing the exercise itself. For example, execute a long box exercise on the reformer while also doing an eye tracking drill. The exercise stays the same — the brain engagement multiplies. Clients who have been bored or under-challenged by familiar exercises often find this reengages them immediately.

Integrate brain drills by treating them like any other exercise you program
The most sustainable approach is to stop thinking of brain-based work as an add-on and start treating it as a programming staple — as fundamental as footwork or spinal articulation. When brain-based work is programmed with the same intentionality as everything else, your clients experience it as a coherent system — and the cumulative results reflect that.

The speed of response is one of the most striking things about this work. Many clients feel a shift within minutes. Sometimes faster. This isn't a gradual training adaptation — it's the nervous system receiving a clearer signal and reorganizing movement quality in real time.
Early research using fNIRS and EEG brain imaging found neural oxygenation increases as high as 44% in a single BrainSpeed session. What clients report is simpler: the session feels different.
